Excess Baggage avoidance almost deadly

With the advent of cheap airfares from the airlines due to increased competition, the cost of excess baggage has increased to help off-set the cost of a seat. At PACK & SEND, one of the biggest shippers of excess baggage around and out of New Zealand, we had to chuckle at a recent incident in the UK.

With all the stereotypical jokes aside about the IQ’s of Boy Bands and how the Scottish choose to spend their money, we were entertained to read about James McElvar from the Scottish boy band Rewind, who attempted to avoid paying an Excess Baggage charge while travelling in the UK.

James was not allowed to take on board two suitcases on a flight from London to Glasgow, and had to pay an Excess Baggage fee of £45, the equivalent of NZD$104. In his wisdom he decided to wear all of his extra luggage onto the plane. According to reports James wore six T-shirts, four sweat shirts, two jackets, three pairs of jeans, and two pairs of shorts.

Unsurprisingly, James was taken to Glasgow Hospital immediately from the flight suffering from severe heat exhaustion after he complained of light-headedness, sweating then vomited and fainted.

James made a full recovery and was reunited with the other members of Rewind later in the week.
