New PACK & SEND Sea Freight Service to UK and Europe Saves You More

Posted by on in Pack & Send Blog

Sending to the UK and Europe just got cheaper with new Sea Freight Service

PACK & SEND are excited to announce a new Sea Freight service to the United Kingdom and Europe for single cartons.

Now you can send one T-chest carton upto 30Kgs via sea freight right to the door in the UK and selected EU countries.

Up until recently, the minimum sea freight shipment into the UK and EU was one cubic metre, which is the equivalent of eight T-chest cartons. This is still a very economical service when you have a large number of cartons and other personal items that you want to send but not when wanting to send only one or two cartons.

If you are on a tight budget but don't have a tight timeframe then this new sea freight service is an excellent option when sending your personal goods to the UK and EU.

It's easy to use the new sea freight service:

  • Contact your closest PACK & SEND Store and arrange for your T-chest cartons - you can send up to eight T-chest cartons using this service, each weighing no more than 30Kgs - these can be delivered to your door or available in-store.
  • Pack your cartons with your personal items, bring them back into the store or arrange for the store to pick them up
  • PACK & SEND will consolidate, or combine, your cartons with other PACK & SEND customers and send them via sea freight to the UK. At the Port, the cartons are Customs cleared and then delivered to the door.

Transit times for this service are expected to approximately 100 days.

To learn more about this new sea freight service or to book in a shipment please contact your local PACK & SEND store now.

Wrapping up your Corporate Gifts for 2015

Wrapping up your Corporate Gifts for 2015

pack send corporate gifts

At PACK & SEND we see a number of businesses coming into our stores at this time of year wanting to send some Christmas cheer to recognise their customers and colleagues after a busy, and hopefully, productive year.

Gift baskets, bottles of wine and coffee table books are the usual gifts of choice with unique New Zealand art now starting to feature for the overseas customer.

With time at a premium and only a handful of weeks to go until Christmas, the team at PACK & SEND provide wine bottle packaging, super strong cartons to protect special gifts and books, as well as our customised cardboard art boxes for those precious canvas paintings and then send them around the country or overseas in time for the recipient to enjoy just before they leave for their holidays.

Want to send something different this Christmas?

When you’ve sent enough cases of wine and jars of chutney’s to feed a small army maybe a different gift to your favourite client or colleague this year could include:

1. The Gift of Giving – Sponsor a child, a school, a library or even a goat for a village and use the name of your favourite customer.

2. The Gift of Wellbeing – Pamper your favourite customer with a personalised gift certificate for a pedicure, manicure, beauty salon treatment, or Men’s grooming package.

3. The Gift of More Time – Recognise the efforts of a hard-working colleague and give them a gift certificate for a house cleaning service, gardening and lawn service or car grooming service.

4. The Gift of Fitness - We all know the importance of staying healthy so for your number one client, give them a fitbit or similar device so they can monitor their own fitness.

5. Handwritten Note – Sometimes it's the simple things that are the best. Did you know that a survey found that when a handwritten note was compared to a personal email or social media message, 85% of respondents felt it was more personal, 78% of people felt more connected, 81% said it was more meaningful and 77% listed it as the best way to show you care.

PACK & SEND Tauranga avoids extermination from collector piece

PACK & SEND Tauranga avoids extermination from collector piecepack send tauranga pack dalek

When Richard Dagg, franchisee at PACK & SEND Tauranga was asked to pack and send a collectors piece from Tauranga to Otago he presumed it would be a framed All Blacks rugby shirt or a small model, which are often sent through his store.

Upon collection of the item, Richard came face to face with one of the most dreaded aliens known to man - Dr Who's evil enemy - The Dalek. This was a life-size model standing 1.8m tall.

Avoiding the death ray from the gunstick, Richard was able to manoeuvre the Dalek into his van and contain him securely in the store while suitable packaging was created to move him safely down to Otago.

Using PACK & SEND’s Fragile Freight service, the Dalek was delivered safely to the new owner.

On further investigation, Richard discovered that this is the third Dalek to be produced in Tauranga which have been subsequently moved to other areas in the North Island. Maybe this is the start of world domination by the Daleks?

Big Trophy no challenge for PACK & SEND Stores

Big Trophy no challenge for PACK & SEND Storespack send riccarton send kudu

There must have been something in the water in the South Island recently with two PACK & SEND stores asked to pack and send taxidermied animals to locations in the North Island.

PACK & SEND Riccarton was recently asked to pack and send a large Kudu head to Wellington. A Kudu is a type of antelope mainly found in Eastern Africa and was proudly displayed on the wall at the North Canterbury Hunting and Fishing store, and PACK & SEND Queenstown was asked to pack and send a deer stag with intricate antlers to a customer in Palmerston North.

Alongside the big game trophies was a smaller, but just as interesting, evil looking badger recently sold on Trade Me to a buyer in Auckland. On picking up the badger, the seller admitted that he was loathed to sell the “wee fella” but it was terrorising both the kids and dog when they entered the living room.

pack send riccarton send badger

All the animals were packed into custom-made cartons, protected by PACK & SEND’s Foam-in-Place packaging and sent to the door. "The Foam-in-Place packaging is ideal for these types of items as the animals are delicate in areas such as the ears, tails and, in the case of the Kudu and Deer, the antlers. The foam absorbs any shock and vibration from the handling during the transportation of the items and ensures the safe travel and future enjoyment once delivered" explains Nathan Paul, PACK & SEND's National Operations Manager.

The receiver of the Stag’s head emailed the PACK & SEND Queenstown store -

“Just a note to thank you very much for the excellent job packaging our deer antlers sent last week. They arrived perfectly; really impressed with the care and detail you went to with the packaging. Much appreciated. Cheers Callum”

Students getting ready to PACK & SEND

Students getting ready to PACK & SENDpack send student freight

With the end of the year fast approaching students from all around the country are starting to "hunker down" in preparation for end-of-year exams. At the same time the team at PACK & SEND are getting ready for the annual student migration from their home stays, university halls and student flats back to their comfortable homes where Mum and Dad will cook, clean and generally run around after them until it's time to go back and do it all over again!!

overseas student moving

The vans have been serviced for the pick ups involving beds, desks, mountain bikes, and other flatting paraphernalia. The box walls have been replenished to provide plenty of super-strong packing boxes for the extra clothes and books that have been acquired over the previous eight months and extra bubble wrap has been ordered to help with the packing of the gaming computers, 42 inch plasma TV's, Playstations and Xboxes and the other 'essential items' that every student needs to help get them through the academic year.

As time management doesn't seem to be part of any curriculum often PACK & SEND stores receive items from students just as they are about to jump on a plane back home. That's no problem for our stores, as we can pack and send everything to the nominated address within a couple of days.

Some PACK & SEND stores also offer a storage service for those students who are returning after the summer break or don't have a fixed abode when they first leave - this is often the case with graduating students who are travelling overseas to take up newly found employment, with the PACK & SEND store forwarding the items on once they are settled.

If you need help moving at the end of the year or know and love someone that needs help then please click here to learn more about PACK & SEND's Student Moving services and make an enquiry to the closest store. Click Here

PACK & SEND goes over the top in Wellington

PACK & SEND goes over the top in Wellington

When Roger Tuarau and his team at PACK & SEND Thorndon Quay were asked to move furniture and personal belongings from a customer's apartment in downtown Wellington even they were surprised as to the heights they would have to go to complete the job.

"All of the personal effects, artwork and furniture was packed up and moved down the eight flights of stairs, or down in the elevator, to the store ready to be transported via our Furniture Removal service to Auckland" explains Roger. "The only problem we had was the large bespoke three seater lounge suite which couldn't be moved down the stairs. It had to go out the window."

"At PACK & SEND we have a 'No Limits' Philosophy, where nothing is too hard for us to pack and send, but this certainly had us testing our resources" exclaimed Roger. "Having access to the right tools certainly helps with these types of movements, and we were able to use a crane with an experienced crane operator to safely remove the lounge suite from the fourth story apartment building with surgical precision, it was pretty special to be part of" says Roger.

With everything now down on Terra Firma the team at PACK & SEND Thorndon Quay quickly packed the lounge suite, loaded it with the rest of the customer's belongings and transported to her new apartment in Auckland.

Excess Baggage avoidance almost deadly

Excess Baggage avoidance almost deadlysend excess baggage

With the advent of cheap airfares from the airlines due to increased competition, the cost of excess baggage has increased to help off-set the cost of a seat. At PACK & SEND, one of the biggest shippers of excess baggage around and out of New Zealand, we had to chuckle at a recent incident in the UK.

With all the stereotypical jokes aside about the IQ's of Boy Bands and how the Scottish choose to spend their money, we were entertained to read about James McElvar from the Scottish boy band Rewind, who attempted to avoid paying an Excess Baggage charge while travelling in the UK.

James was not allowed to take on board two suitcases on a flight from London to Glasgow, and had to pay an Excess Baggage fee of £45, the equivalent of NZD$104. In his wisdom he decided to wear all of his extra luggage onto the plane. According to reports James wore six T-shirts, four sweat shirts, two jackets, three pairs of jeans, and two pairs of shorts.

Unsurprisingly, James was taken to Glasgow Hospital immediately from the flight suffering from severe heat exhaustion after he complained of light-headedness, sweating then vomited and fainted.

James made a full recovery and was reunited with the other members of Rewind later in the week.

Trade Me Car Parts move well on PACK & SEND Freight Service

Trade Me Car Parts move well on PACK & SEND Freight Service

Over the last six years PACK & SEND Riccarton has moved at least three cars - in parts - which have all been sold on Trade Me.

Engines, body panels and bumper bars, windscreens, complete exhaust systems and most commonly Mag Wheels have all been sent by the team at PACK & SEND Riccarton through the stores General Freight Service.Trade Me send Mag wheels

"Most of the car parts are too big for the normal Courier Service due to their size and or their weight, but can easily move through our General Freight service with either a small amount of packaging or placed on a pallet" says Store Manager Andrew Johnson.

Just this week the Riccarton Store picked up a Ford Anglia rear axle and drive shaft for a customer in Auckland, who purchased them on Trade Me for a restoration project.

"One of the benefits of using PACK & SEND is that we can pick up items that are unpacked or require packing that the seller isn't prepared to do, or are listed as "Pick Up Only" on the Trade Me listing, and get them packed and sent to anyone, anywhere in New Zealand" adds Andrew.

And now it's not just Kiwis buying car parts on Trade Me. "One of our more unusual car part jobs was sending a VW Kombi Van bench seat to a customer in Perth, Western Australia" says Nathan Paul, PACK & SEND's National Operations Manager. "The customer couldn't source what he needed in Australia, so found one on Trade Me then contacted us to pick it up, pack it and then send it to his workshop in Perth"

Sending Lithium Batteries by Air Freight - Just how dangerous is your smart phone?

Sending Lithium Batteries by Air Freight - Just how dangerous is your smart phone?send lithium battery phone overseas

Need to send a smart phone, tablet or something similar overseas that is powered by a Lithium Battery? Did you know that these items are regarded as Dangerous Goods and a number of freight, courier companies and Postal providers are now refusing to send any item that contains these types of batteries?

Due to increasing safety concerns raised by the aviation industry, the international regulations governing the shipping of Lithium Batteries have been tightened and airlines consequently have enforced these regulations more rigorously. Lithium batteries are considered hazardous due to the fact that they can overheat and ignite under certain conditions.

Following several serious (fire) incidents during transport, the regulations for this product type were adjusted and the more stringent regulatory requirements were introduced.

Lithium Batteries are contained in numerous devices including: iPhones and mobile phones, iPods, cameras, MP3 players, portable DVD players, most laptop computers, camcorders, power tools, GPS navigation systems, watches, clocks, calculators, some toys, remote car locks, bicycle lights, electronic shavers and many other consumer electronic devices.

PACK & SEND can ship Lithium Batteries

By following strict international regulations and guidelines PACK & SEND is one of the few freight companies that can ship Lithium Battery devices.PACK & SEND specialises in handling products that contain Lithium Batteries - providing professional packaging materials as well as sending anywhere including domestic and international destinations.

Don't get tipped up when sending overseas with Sea Freight

Posted by on in Pack & Send Blog

Don't get tipped up when sending overseas with Sea Freightsea freight overseas

Sea Freight is an economical way to send lots of stuff overseas. Whether you have items of furniture, lots of packing boxes or you're looking to export your products to another country, Sea Freight can be an excellent alternative to Air Freight. There's lots to know when sending via Sea Freight and often customers aren't given the full story at the start and end up with some nasty surprises(and charges) when their goods arrive. Read on to find out whether Sea Freight is the option for you.

LCL and FCL Sea Freight

The most common way to send via Sea Freight is LCL or "Less than a Container Load" which means your goods will be travelling with other customers goods within the same container. Depending on what you are sending, your goods can be palletised or packed as loose freight within the container. If you have a number of cartons then we would strongly recommend that you palletise your shipment to ensure the safe, full delivery at destination. The minimum charges for LCL freight are based on one cubic metre.pack send riccarton student sea freight uk

When you want to move your entire home contents or have a large commercial shipment then FCL, or a "Full Container Load" may be the better alternative to LCL. Your goods will travel within their own container. Containers are either 20 foot or 40 foot and become a cost effective solution when you have approximately 10 cubic metres are more to send. The charges associated with moving a container are based on the size of the container therefore the more you send the better the cost effectiveness is.

Transit Times

Sea Freight is great for those that don't have deadlines or a desperate need for their goods. Depending on the final destination and the type of service selected the transit times for Sea Freight is anywhere from two weeks to Australia, to three months for some Northern Hemisphere destinations. Delays can be due to filling a LCL container, weather issues during transit, or industrial action at the port.

Sending with Sea Freight - Get the full story

When sending with Sea Freight, either LCL or FCL, there are three groups of charges that every shipment will incur.

  • Origin and Export Charges - These charges are the New Zealand based charges which include pick up, packing and/or palletising, export documentation, and sea freight and fuel charges.
  • Destination Charges - When the goods arrive at their final destination a number of fixed charges are payable before they are released. These charges include port and terminal handling charges, import charges and possible quarantine or delivery charges. Destination charges can be pre-paid with origin and export charges to reduce delays.
  • Government Customs Duties and Taxes - all shipments may be subjected to duties and taxes. The charges will depend on the type of shipment. For example a commercial shipment may be subject to GST or VAT or a specific tariff, and a personal shipment may be charged a clearance fee.

Unfortunately a number of customers are only advised of the first group of charges and are left with further charges when they uplift their goods. It's important to know the full story so you can plan and budget for these charges and avoid any unexpected surprises!!

PACK & SEND Sea Freight Services

At PACK & SEND you can choose from a Sea Freight Service that suits your budget and timeframe.

  • Sea Freight to the Door - Shipping to the Door can be a lower cost alternative to air freight but with the same convenience of a kerbside delivery at your international destination. The service consolidates your freight with other shippers to keep shipping costs to a minimum. This service includes all documentation, both here in New Zealand and at your final destination, export and terminal handling charges, customs clearance, as well as the international sea freight and delivery to the door. This shipping service excludes payment of customs duties and taxes which may occur at the final destination.
  • Sea Freight to the Port - With weekly sailings to over 250 destinations worldwide our Sea Freight to the Port service is an economical option when shipping large, bulky, heavy goods overseas. This service includes all export documentation and charges, and Sea Freight to the Port. As some countries or destinations within countries do not allow the door to door service, your goods will be shipped to a safe and secure, controlled depot at the destination port. Destination and terminal handling charges, customs clearance and delivery fees will be arranged and payable by you as the goods reach the destination port prior to you uplifting your goods. As part of our service, your PACK & SEND store will provide you with the necessary documentation and contacts required to make this process as easy as possible.

Now the World Cup is over send your courier company for six!

Posted by on in Pack & Send Blog

Is it about time you hit your courier or freight company for six?

B mac Sending

With the Cricket World Cup a distant but cherished memory and the new financial year rolling over, it's about time you took stock of your courier and freight providers for 2015 and beyond.

There are a number of factors to consider when looking at your courier and freight requirements, these include:

  • Service - Do you need an overnight, premium courier service or is a 2 to 3 day economical service  sufficient? Or do you need the combination of having both services available depending on your requirements? Do you need to send overseas as well as around the country?
  • Flexibility - Do you require flexibility in pick up times from your office or business? Maybe pick ups from other branches or locations outside of your city or from overseas?
  • Packing - Are you tired of having items broken while with the courier? Do you need packing materials or specialist packing for those sensitive items?
  • Price - Are you a high volume user or only send every once in a while? Do you or your customers expect overnight delivery or is a couple of days acceptable? These requirements will determine the costs involved.

How many freight accounts do you have?

Many courier and freight companies only provide one service eg. overnight delivery, and have restrictions on how much they can carry(usually up to 25Kgs). If you send different sized items you may find that you are opening accounts with multiple carriers. The means different contact people, different consignment requirements and more invoices to collate. The administration aspect of sending almost becomes a full-time job requiring skills in cubic volume calculations, weight estimation and custom packing. The penalty of getting one of these wrong is either additional charges or breakage.

Ask PACK & SEND for a review of your courier and freight requirements

PACK & SEND has the widest range of domestic and international courier and freight services in New Zealand. A professional, customised packing service is readily available for all your packaging requirements.

Retro suitcases all the rage in Asia

Posted by on in Pack & Send Blog

Retro suitcases all the rage in Asiajapan excess baggage retro

When a young Japanese couple contacted Grant Dalgarno at PACK & SEND Newmarket about sending excess baggage back home, he thought he was back in the 70's when he picked up 19 retro suitcases full of nick knacks from the couple's travels.

Apparently all the rage back in Japan and other asian countries, the retro suitcases are destined for the couple's thriving retro business with maybe more to come. "Each suitcase weighed about 20kgs each, filled with Op-Shop purchases while the young couple travelled around the North Island over the Christmas, New Year period" said Grant.

"With close to 400kgs of weight, they chose our Sea Freight option to send back to Japan. Everything was neatly packed onto a pallet and consigned to Tokyo. Time wasn't an issue because they still had some travelling to do in Australia" said Grant.

A quick look on TradeMe reveals close to 100 retro suitcases for sale - maybe we should all check the attic or storage room for a suitcase or two??

If you are looking at sending something into Asia, contact your local PACK & SEND store about the different options available.

"Our There and Back international courier service allows our customer to send their visa and immigration documentation via our express courier service with full track and trace to the Embassy or Consulate then, when the documentation is ready to be picked up, we arrange for everything to come back" says Nathan Paul, PACK & SEND's National Operations Manager.

Being part of a world-wide network allows PACK & SEND to provide services and capabilities that other courier or postal service providers can't do.

"Arranging a pick up in a foreign country can be difficult and time-consuming, not to mention language barriers and time zone differences, and this falls into the 'too hard basket' for most carriers. We offer the ability to arrange the pick up on behalf of our customers and have everything returned as quickly as possible" adds Nathan Paul.

This service is not limited to documents. Individuals and businesses have also used this service for sending tenders and samples, artworks for exhibition, and laptops and other IT equipment for updating or calibration with PACK & SEND to ensure both the safe sending and return of their items from an overseas destination.

Ship goes by Air after getting the royal treatment

Ship goes by Air after getting the royal treatment

Widely regarded as the "King of packing", PACK & SEND Albany Franchisee Garry Le Verne had the recent task of packing and sending a model ship to the United Kingdom.

"It was going to our customer's son who had moved to the UK some time ago and had always loved the model ship that his father painstakingly built as he was growing up" says Garry.

Packing this type of model is not for the faint hearted. Measuring over 160cm in length, the model ship sat in a bed of Foam-In-Place, supported with more foam to keep the model away from the sides of a large custom-made cardboard carton

"Between here and the UK the model ship will go through a number of hands and conveyor systems so I had to make sure it was well packed to withstand the usual knocks and bangs that occur in the handling process. I can happily say that the son was rapt to receive his 'New Toy' in the same condition that it left our store" remarked Garry.

The Foam-In-Place technology is not only used in the delicate packing of models and sculptures but also for the protection of sensitive electronics and IT equipment.

"While Garry was packing the model ship, we also had half a tonne of audio visual equipment that needed to be packed then airfreighted to Queensland for a retro-fit of a super yacht. We used the Foam-In-Place to pack the large speakers and audio equipment to minimise any vibration during transit as this can damage the sensitive components inside the cabinetry" says Cherry Le Verne.

Need a better solution for sending parcels around the country or overseas?

Posted by on in Pack & Send Blog

For most people sending parcels overseas or around New Zealand is both time consuming and often frustrating.

people waiting in queue to send parcelFinding a suitable box, packing the item correctly so it doesn't get damaged, measuring the box to know it's weight and dimensions, labelling the box correctly so it gets to the right destination, then waiting in line at the post office or at home or the office for the courier to pick it up takes an enormous amount of time. Even worse when you find out that it's too big or too heavy and then you need to start all over again can create significant irritation.

At your local PACK & SEND Store you have the flexibility to do as much or as little as you want when you want to send something overseas or around the country. Simply bring in what you want to send, either packed or unpacked, and the team at PACK & SEND will do the rest. Better still there aren't any queues!!

No Limits Sending

Most couriers and the post office have restrictions on what you can send. Commonly these restrictions include nothing weighing over 25Kgs or the length that exceeds 1.5 metres. Other than the post office, you often need to set up an account with a courier company and buy books of 20 tickets before you can start sending - that's no good if you only want to send one item.

At PACK & SEND there are no limits to the weight or size of your parcel(s) and a service that will meet your needs. Sending files back to the Head Office in Sydney, a new laptop to the sales rep based in Napier, all your old baby clothes to your best friend who's expecting in Wellington, that new carbon fibre paddle for your kayak from Murchison, are daily items packed and sent from PACK & SEND stores.

You don't need to set up a freight account

Whether you send a parcel every now and again or ten consignments every day PACK & SEND has a cost management solution for you too. For the infrequent sender simply pay by cash, eftpos or credit card at the time of sending your parcel, there's no need to buy books of tickets from your courier and let them sit in the bottom drawer for months. For the business customer or high volume user, talk with your local PACK & SEND store about our Advantage Partner Program to help make sending easy.

Get the full story when sending overseas

Unfortunately gone are the days when you simply send something overseas and it reaches its destination with minimal interruption. Nowadays every parcel will go through multiple security clearances, be subject to customs authority scrutiny, requires correct documentation, and be handled by a number of automated and manual sorting "hubs" before it is delivered to its final destination.

The team at PACK & SEND are experts when sending overseas and can fully inform you of the processes involved to ensure a smooth, hassle-free experience. Different countries have different rules, regulations and documentation, some countries have restrictions on what you are allowed to send and all countries have some form of customs control. Your local PACK & SEND store has a wealth of knowledge when you need to send something, somewhere.
